The Seven Types of Rest - Lisa C

When we think of rest, most of us think of sleep—but there’s so much more to it than that. True rest is about more than just lying down or taking a nap. Sometimes, even after a full night’s sleep, we still wake up feeling tired. That’s because we’re not getting the right kind of rest.

I’ve learned that there are actually seven types of rest, and once I started paying attention to all of them, I noticed a huge difference in my energy, focus, and overall wellness. Let me break them down for you:

1. Physical Rest

This one’s the most obvious. It includes both passive rest like sleeping and active rest like gentle stretching, yoga, or a relaxing bath. Our bodies need time to recover from daily movement and stress.

Try this: Take a nap, go to bed earlier, or unwind with a slow yoga flow.

2. Mental Rest

Ever feel like your brain just won’t turn off? That’s a sign you need mental rest. It’s about giving your mind a break from constant thinking, planning, and decision-making.

Try this: Take short breaks throughout your day, write things down instead of storing them in your head, or try a few minutes of meditation.

3. Sensory Rest

We’re constantly surrounded by lights, screens, noises, and notifications. All of that can wear us out without even realizing it.

Try this: Unplug from your phone, turn off background noise, dim the lights, or enjoy a few quiet moments outside.

4. Emotional Rest

Sometimes we hold in our feelings to keep the peace or support others. Emotional rest means having safe spaces to be your real, honest self without judgment.

Try this: Talk to a trusted friend, write in a journal, or give yourself permission to feel what you feel.

5. Social Rest

This doesn’t mean avoiding people completely—it means choosing to spend time with people who recharge you, not drain you.

Try this: Limit time with energy-drainers and make space for people who lift you up and let you be yourself.

6. Creative Rest

We use creativity every day—whether it’s problem-solving, parenting, or literally creating something. Creative rest is about refilling your inspiration tank.

Try this: Go for a walk in nature, listen to music, or do something that brings you joy without pressure to perform.

7. Spiritual Rest

This type of rest helps us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves. It brings peace and purpose to our lives.

Try this: Meditate, pray, spend time in nature, or do something that gives you a sense of meaning.

Rest isn’t just about doing less…it’s about doing what truly helps you feel restored. Take a moment today to check in with yourself. What kind of rest do you need right now?

Remember…it’s okay to pause. It’s actually powerful…a part of our journey. It’s not just a reward at the end. 💛
